Privacy Policy
Juniper Consultants LLC ("Juniper," "we," "us," or "our") operates GageLog. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to that information.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
- Account information: your name, username, and email address when you register.
- Payment information: billing details are collected and stored by our payment processor, Stripe, Inc. We do not store your full card number on our servers.
- Usage data: the gage sources you subscribe to, report generation activity, and API request logs (for security and debugging). Logs are retained for 90 days.
- Consent records: the date and time you agreed to our Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy.
- Mobile phone number: collected only if you choose to add a text message destination to one of your gage monitors. Providing a number is optional and is never required to use GageLog.
- Approximate location: used only to show you which river gages are nearby.
If you allow your browser's location prompt, we round the coordinates to roughly 11 km
before storing them, in a cookie named
gl_locon your own device — we never receive your precise position. If you don't, our content delivery network supplies a coarse region derived from your network connection. Neither is stored on our servers, written to our logs, or used for anything other than deciding which gages to show you. Clearing your cookies removes it.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To create and manage your account and subscription.
- To provide, maintain, and improve the GageLog service.
- To process payments through Stripe.
- To send transactional communications (account confirmations, billing receipts, service alerts). We do not send marketing email without your explicit opt-in.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
3. Sharing Your Information
We do not sell your personal information for money, though showing ads involves a transfer that some U.S. state laws define as a "sale" or "share" — see Section 5. We share it only with:
- Stripe, Inc. — to process subscription payments. Stripe's privacy practices are described at stripe.com/privacy.
- Google LLC — to provide site analytics, and only if you accept analytics cookies or in the limited server-side form described in Section 5; and, for viewers who see ads, to serve and measure those ads through Google AdSense. We never send Google your name, email address, or account number.
- Infrastructure providers — cloud hosting and database services used to operate GageLog, bound by confidentiality obligations.
- Law enforcement — when required by applicable law, court order, or to protect the rights or safety of Juniper or others.
4. Text Message (SMS) Alerts
GageLog can send text message alerts for gage monitors you create. This section describes how we handle the mobile number and consent associated with that feature.
- How consent is obtained: you opt in on the GageLog website by adding a text message destination to a monitor while signed in to your account. There is no keyword, verbal, IVR, or point-of-sale opt-in, and we never obtain numbers from purchased, rented, or shared lists.
- What we send: alerts triggered by the conditions you configured on gages you monitor, plus the confirmation, HELP, and STOP replies required to operate the service. We do not send marketing or promotional text messages.
- Frequency: message frequency varies and depends on how many monitors you create and on river conditions. Each monitor observes a cooldown period between alerts and is capped at 10 alerts per rolling 24 hours.
- Cost: message and data rates may apply. GageLog does not charge for text alerts; your mobile carrier's rates are between you and your carrier.
- Stopping messages: reply STOP to any message, or remove the text message destination from the monitor in your account, to stop text alerts. Reply HELP for help.
- Sharing: we do not sell or share mobile phone numbers, text message opt-in data, or consent records with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing purposes. Your number is disclosed only to the messaging providers and mobile carriers that transmit the alerts you requested, solely for that purpose, and to law enforcement where required by Section 3 of this policy.
- Retention: we retain your number for as long as a monitor of yours uses it as a destination. Removing the destination or deleting the monitor removes the number from that monitor; opt-out records are retained as needed to honor your STOP request.
5. Analytics, Cookies and Advertising
GageLog uses Google Analytics 4, a service provided by Google LLC, to understand which parts of the site people use — for example, how many visitors reach the gage explorer, and which pages precede a sign-up.
Analytics cookies are off until you accept them. On your first visit we ask, and
until you accept, Google Analytics runs in a cookieless mode that records no persistent identifier
for you. If you accept, it sets cookies (_ga and _ga_*, expiring after up
to two years) holding a random identifier used to recognize a returning browser. If you later
decline via the "Cookie preferences" link in our footer, we delete those cookies.
We also send a small number of events to Google Analytics from our own servers, so that actions that complete outside the browser are counted — most importantly a successful subscription payment, which Stripe confirms to us after you have left the checkout page. When you have accepted analytics cookies, these events carry the same identifier as your browsing so the two connect. When you have not, they carry a one-off identifier scoped to that single event, which lets us count the total without building a profile of you. In either case we never send Google your name, email address, or account number: any account reference is replaced with an irreversible pseudonym.
Google processes this data as described in its Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics on every site you visit with Google's browser add-on.
Cookies we set ourselves are strictly necessary or set at your request, and are not covered by the
banner: your sign-in session, the CSRF token that protects forms, gl_consent (records
your answer to the banner so we stop asking), and gl_loc (Section 1).
Advertising. Pages viewed while signed out, or on the Free plan, may show ads served by Google AdSense (Google LLC). Every paid plan removes them. To serve and measure those ads, Google may read and set its own cookies and similar identifiers in your browser and may use them, together with information collected on other sites, to select which ads you see. We do not give Google your name, email address, or account number, and we are not paid for access to your personal information — but this kind of ad delivery is treated as "sharing" for targeted advertising, or as a "sale" of personal information, under some U.S. state privacy laws, and you have the right to opt out (Section 8).
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, ads run without advertising cookies until you answer Google's consent prompt, which appears separately from our own banner because certified consent for advertising has to come from Google's own tool. Elsewhere, you can turn off personalized advertising for your Google account, or for this browser, at My Ad Center, and review how Google uses cookies in advertising in its advertising policy. Turning off personalization does not remove the ads; it makes them less relevant.
6. Data Retention
We retain your account information for the duration of your subscription and for up to 3 years afterward for compliance and audit purposes. You may request earlier deletion (see Section 8). Payment records may be retained longer as required by tax law.
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (TLS), hashed password storage, and access controls. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights under applicable privacy law (including the GDPR and U.S. state consumer privacy laws) to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Request correction of inaccurate data.
- Request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Receive a copy of your data in a portable format.
- Opt out of targeted advertising, and of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information as those terms are used in U.S. state privacy laws. Any paid plan removes ads entirely; to opt out without upgrading, email us at the address below, or turn off ad personalization at My Ad Center.

9. Children's Privacy
GageLog is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or a prominent notice within the service. The "Effective date" at the top of this page reflects the date of the most recent revision.
